The church has a serious PR problem. I hate to approach something so sacred with a business mindset, but to be honest, the church started it.
Seeing church family bite their tongues about obeying shelter-in-place rules has been a tough pill to swallow. But what truly aggravated my spirit, even more, were those calling for direct violations.
I’m an 80’s baby, 90’s kid, so I remember the Left Behind Series and the Y2K fears of the government turning on believers. Disregarding shelter-in-place laws is not a statement of faith.
It’s embarrassing to be a believer when the world is seeing us come unhinged over the request to stay home. At no point was the church asked to stop practicing its faith.
Seeing images of “Christians” acting out and demanding access to their local Applebees has been humiliating. The world is mocking the church because it lacks common sense and a basic understanding of its own scriptures.
Since I am a firm believer in showing not telling, here are 5 scriptures that *support* obeying your government.
Romans 13:1
1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
Titus 3:1
1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,
1 Peter 2:13-14
13 Submit yourselves for the Lordโs sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.
Nehemiah 2:7
7 I also said to him, โIf it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah?
Ezra 6:7
7 Do not interfere with the work on this temple of God. Let the governor of the Jews and the Jewish elders rebuild this house of God on its site.
The theme in these scriptures are a respect for authority and an acknowledgment that G-d is so powerful He is capable of being in charge of the humans who are in “charge”.
It’s frustrating to see fellow members of the Abrahamic faith not trust that G-d is big enough to be in control.
And another thing, what happened to our listening skills?
The orders never said to stop practicing faith. I think what happened here is very apparent. Church has become a big business and attendance was affecting pockets. Which begs the question, who is the church really serving?
Of course, I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t do a little twitter rant about it so #BonApetit
